The issue
Sustainability and environmental stewardship have been core values at Deliberate from the start, but as the business grew, the team wanted to go further by understanding their full environmental impact and taking real responsibility for it.
The first step was to measure their carbon emissions. By calculating their full business footprint, Deliberate could pinpoint where their biggest impacts lay and put meaningful reduction plans in place. This work wasn’t just about reporting or compliance—it was about making real, measurable change.
The challenges
Deliberate used Ecologi Zero to track their emissions across their first full reporting year (1st September 2023 – 31st August 2024), setting a baseline to measure future reductions.
By working with Ecologi, the team ensured their emissions data was aligned with internationally recognised standards, including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
With Ecologi Zero, Deliberate was able to:
Accurately measure their emissions using official UK government and Small World Consulting data.
Gain a complete picture of their footprint, covering Scopes 1, 2, and the most relevant Scope 3 categories.
Identify key areas for emissions reductions and track progress over time.
As a fully remote company, Deliberate already operates with a lighter footprint—cutting out the emissions associated with office spaces and commuting. While home working does increase domestic energy use, this is captured within their Scope 3 reporting, and overall the impact is a significant net reduction in emissions.
The solution
Deliberate’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond measurement—they are using their emissions insights to drive real action. With Ecologi Zero they have refined their sustainability strategy and set clear, measurable goals to improve efficiency and lower emissions.
Since publishing their first emissions report, the team has already introduced a range of environmental initiatives, embedding sustainability deep into their business operations. These include:
Formalising sustainable travel policies – Prioritising rail travel and ensuring low-carbon transport remains the default as the company grows.
Supporting employees – Exploring ways to help their remote workforce make greener choices, from cycling initiatives to guidance on home energy efficiency.
Enhancing supply chain sustainability – Working closely with freelancers to better understand and account for emissions in their value chain.
Pursuing B Corp certification – Demonstrating their commitment to responsible business by progressing towards full accreditation.
As well as this, Ecologi have been able to support Deliberate in their goal of giving back to the planet by funding climate action across the globe. Using their baseline emissions measurements, the Ecologi climate team helped establish a BVCM strategy and guided budget setting for funding restoration and carbon reduction appropriate to their footprint.
The results
Originally aiming to be carbon-negative by 2025, Deliberate has since evolved its approach—moving beyond offsetting to a more holistic, contribution-led strategy. They recognise that tackling climate change requires both reducing their own footprint and investing in wider solutions that create lasting impact.
By embedding sustainability into their operations and working with Ecologi to fund climate solutions, Deliberate is proving that small businesses can be a force for good. Their journey is just beginning, but they are already making a real difference—for their people, their industry, and the planet.
